One day by the sea - our favourite beaches on the Tuscan coast

The sun of July and August can be particularly harsh in Val d’Orcia, but there is no problem, as in only 1 hour by car you can reach some of the most beautiful beaches of Tuscany and relax by the sea.

Sleeping in the countryside is a great deal, as you can escape the crowds and the flies that haunt the coast at night, while the evenings at Il Rigo are dried, beautiful and peaceful!

We listed here our favourite beaches, that are natural, secluded and hopefully not too crowded.
We are not really fans of popular beaches, where the space is taken over by deckchairs and umbrellas set up by bathing establishments, so most of the following recommendations are “spiaggia libera”, free beaches, where you have to bring your own towels, parasols and water!
The access to these beaches is free, but there is a ticket for the parking.

1. Parco della Maremma - Marina di Alberese

Alberese is the gate to the Parco dell’Uccellina, a natural reserve within the area of Grosseto overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The uncontaminated nature of the park of Maremma, with blue sea, sandy shores and the Alberese pine wood, is the perfect place to enjoy the Tuscan coast!

2. Cala Violina

To the north of Castiglione, the Cala Violina is a lovely beach at the end of a 15-minute walk along a woodland trail.

3. Punta ala (park in via dei macchiaioli)

Is a long and sandy beach, quiet, well maintained and suitable for children!

4. Le Marze

Located between Marina di Grosseto and Castiglion della Pescaia, this is a long and sandy beach, coasted by the magnificent scenario of the “Pineta del Tombolo”, a rich Mediterranean pine-trees wood.

5. Le Rocchette

Le Rocchette (it means “tiny rocks”) has beautiful, turquoise waters, that you can access through a sandy beach and a rocky cliff.

6. I due pini - Porto Santo Stefano

This fish restaurant, located just outside Porto Santo Stefano, features a panoramic terrace overlooking the “Monte Argentario” and a private beach! It’s rustic and informal, perfect to enjoy and good fish lunch, and than a restoring siesta under the umbrella, cradled by the sound of the sea!

7. Cala Bengodi - Talamone

This is a tiny pebble beach, with a magnificent view on the gulf of Talamone. The Mediterranean vegetation around the beach offers a shelter from the sun in the hottest hours.

8. La Buca delle Fate

A bit farer from Il Rigo, but definitely worth the distance, this amazing secluded smooth-rock beach is nestled amidst Mediterranean woods and surrounded by incredible cliffs. This beautiful spot is reachable on foot only, during a 20 min walk in the wood.

9. Bolsena - le spiagge comunali di Marta

An valid alternative to the sea coast, is the visit at the beaches of the volcanic lake of Bolsena! This is one of the deepest lakes in Italy and famous for the cleanness of its water and nature!
The lake is completely bathing One of the best beaches is the one in the village of Marta.
